Things to do with your curly hair

Whether you have short curly hair or longer waves, the rule number one is to love the texture of your hair. Which is the best way to accept and treat it. Now is a time to stop using hair straighteners and straightening creams and work on your curls to keep them lush. This is why it is important to pay attention to these simple tips to make your incredibly curly hair look beautiful at all times.

1. Style your curls when they’re wet

These are some of the best and easiest ways to obtain bounce, volume and a natural looking wave or curl pattern. A number of specialised products can be applied, according to the density of the hair.

If hair is fine, you should use a volumising mousse first and then a light curl enhancer. If hair is medium to thick or slightly coarse, apply a curl-definer instead, which will also help control the curls.

These products should be applied from the roots to the ends and combed through the hair with a wide-tooth comb to remove knots. It also helps to distribute these products evenly, making sure that all the curls get the maximum benefit from the product.

When products are put in place, a technique applied by the best stylists is “pulsing”. In this technique the wet hair is taken in small sections, from bottom to top. The hand is hollowed out and the curls are gently rubbed to give them texture. Then the curls are gently pressed against the head. Do not be tempted to run your fingers freely through your hair or comb them. This alters the curls, creating the undesirable frizz.

Repeat this step until the hair is dry and then reach into the roots and rub lightly to smooth the curls. Do not worry that you will have very defined and super perfect curls. It is part of the charm of curly hair. Enjoy the individuality and freedom of this hair type.

2. Pay attention to your hair towel

When we dry our hair, friction from the towel can cause frizz. And it is possible that this is due to the towel that we are using. An option to avoid this problem is a microfibre hair towel. These are specifically designed for the hair and eliminate the friction caused by normal cotton towels. These towels are ideal for curly hair as they eliminate frizz and absorb enough moisture to help reduce drying time by almost half.

3. Let your hair dry outdoors

Air Drying is the best way to remove moisture. A towel is a good option, but it can sometimes be too rough on curly hair.  The most effective method of drying this type of hair is to air dry it naturally. The less you touch your hair as it dries, the better. More handling of the hair means more chance of frizz.

4. All products must provide hydration

Make sure you find the right products that will make your hair look gorgeous. Thanks to their delicate texture, curls require constant moisture and humidity. Curly hair needs non-rinse conditioners, moisturising hair treatments such as masks.

Products should be applied to wet hair starting with the ends and working down to the roots. Alternatively, techniques such as “praying hands” can be used. In this technique you apply products to your hands and place your hair between both hands in the position as if you were going to pray and lower your hands down the hair. Then squeeze the hair as if you were kneading or massaging it. To finish off, the “pulsing” technique is applied.

5. Always use a wide-tooth comb

There are many experts who maintain that a simple comb is essential to keep frizz at bay and the shape of the curl intact. Be sure to use a wide-tooth comb to help manage your curls. A lot of people use their fingers to “comb” their curly hair. When you do, they are not as careful and end up breaking the structure of the curl, contributing to the frizz.

Also another advantage of using a wide-toothed comb is that it helps distribute hair products evenly. When people comb with their hands, the products often concentrate on one area of the hair and the desired effects are not achieved. The use of the comb ensures a much better and more even distribution of the product. It also maintains a natural curly hair texture and helps to prevent curls from falling out during brushing.

6. Coconut oil is the best ally for curly hair

It is an ideal oil for repairing damage to the hair and protecting it from external agents such as UV rays and pollution. To benefit from its use, it should be applied before washing your hair, especially to the ends. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, without exposure to the sun, to avoid further damage. It is advisable to cover the hair with a towel or a plastic cap to facilitate its penetration.

The coconut oil will restore all the natural essential elements that were lost when using a hair dryer, colouring or any chemical treatment. It is advisable to replace the hair oil or serum with coconut oil. This natural ingredient not only will eliminate frizz, but will repair curly hair.

7. Avoid washing your hair excessively

It is best not to wash curly hair more than two or three times a week. If it takes longer to wash it, the longer the curls will last. It is important to clarify that you can wet your hair every day. However you should not apply shampoo at all as this will maintain the natural oils in the hair and help to keep the curls more controlled.
