A Product of ancestral knowledge, in the traditional Chinese medicine there are several methods to restore health, and among them, the Chinese cups are one of the most famous millenary therapies in the world. Known as cupping, this technique is currently a form of alternative medicine. It makes use of cups on the skin, seeking to improve Qi flow or stagnant blood, which is a major cause diseases and pain in the body.

There are several forms of application, but the most popular one is the traditional way, which involves heating the cups made of glass, and using a cotton swab dipped in alcohol that is lit to be put inside. Once the cup is heated, the cotton ball that is clamped by a pair of forceps is removed to place the cup immediately on the patient’s skin, creating a vacuum that draws the tissue.

In this method, the cups are usually placed in vital points, which are mainly focused on the back, leaving them on the skin for about 10 to 15 minutes. After that, the most obvious signs when removing them are bruises caused by the suction. However, these marks do not imply greater concern because they disappear after a week.

Another form of application implies in moving the cups along the areas located within the energetic meridians. However, in both cases the benefit is the same. As explained by the Spanish clinic Chi Spa “the result is the elimination of toxins, the activation of the lymphatic and venous system, skin toning and stimulation of the digestive system.”

On the other hand, it is good to know that although their benefits lack scientific evidence, the decision to use Chinese cupping therapy or not depends on each person. However, it is assigned with an extensive field of application and according to Dr. Victor Manuel Berrido Lulo, an expert acupuncturist, naturopath, homeopath and chiropractor, it usually encompasses pain in the lumbar region, upper and lower back and hip. Other experts also say it is effective in treating migraines, asthma, cellulite, insomnia, constipation and many other ailments.

Something we cannot overlook is its side effects. According to Dr. Berrido, cupping is not recommended on skin areas presenting cases of allergies, ulcers or edema, neither in the abdominal area of pregnant women or in cases of high fever or convulsions. In this regard, Dr. Reid Blackwelder, former president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, adds that this therapy should also be avoided by those who have clotting problems or are taking drugs that may have bleeding as a possible side effect.

Although it seems to be a simple method, if you are considering testing the Chinese cupping therapy, you should consider doing it with experts, because they know the exact location of the energetic meridians and the correct application of this ancient therapy, thanks to which you can enjoy its benefits.
