If you are looking for the Star of David, its meaning and what it represents for different cultures, you must begin by knowing that it is one of the most important symbols of Jewish culture, being part of the flag of the State of Israel; and as its name indicates it is attributed to David, former King of Israel, and it consists of six points formed from two equilateral triangles.
Thus, this six-pointed star is distinguished from the traditional star that has only five points, besides that it forms six triangles that make it have 12 points, which represent the twelve tribes of the Jewish people and the sons of Patriarch Jacob. All these points enclose a space, which corresponds to the way in which the children of Israel camped when they travelled in the desert who placed the Shrine of the Levites and Priests in the centre of their camps.
The composition of the Star of David starts with two large triangles, one with a vertex upwards and the other with a vertex downwards, which is used as a symbol of the human being’s opportunity to climb the pyramid of life, whose ultimate goal is “heaven”, which represents spiritual values and divinity. On the contrary, the vertex downwards means that the human being by not wanting to rise will only deal with material and worldly matters, which will not allow him to evolve from the spiritual point of view.
That’s how when we look for the Star of David, a symbol that before being known by this name was known as the seal of Solomon or Khatam Suleiman for Muslims and Jatam Sholomo for Jews, we can say that we are looking for spiritual evolution and all that this famous symbol represents, which is generally associated with Judaism, but which is known to be used in other religions such as Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.
In this sense, it is difficult to determine the exact origin of the Star of David, because for several cultures it is part of their beliefs; however, some specialists in the subject claim that its origin is Asian, placing it in Mesopotamia, where there are manuscripts that explain the existence of the star as a symbol in ancient Babylon, which was represented in a set of three stars arranged in a triangle with the aim of symbolizing and invoking a triad of astral gods.
According to the Bible, this star is attributed to King David, the first king placed by God on Earth, and according to the biblical stories he faced the giant Goliath, a fact that made him a warrior king and land conqueror. In this way, as time passes, a story emerges in which the son of King David became King Solomon, so he had a hexagram engraved on his ring symbolizing the fight between David and Goliath, which is why it is thought that this star symbolizes the two energies of these warriors, that is, the fight between heaven and earth; hence it was called “Seal of Solomon” in ancient times, but the Israelites later popularized it as the Star of David.
According to some beliefs, this ring of Solomon with the Star of David had great properties and spiritual power, which gave him the ability to speak to animals and control demons, representatives of evil on earth, but these stories are only part of the mythology created around this famous symbol, which some also associate with witchcraft today.
Also, it is said that the origin of the six-pointed star is magical, so it is common to hang it on the walls in order to scare away evil spirits, while alchemists used it as an element that symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth.
But, if we look for the real meaning of the Star of David, we must have several aspects clear. First of all, it represents two elements apparently antagonistic, but complementary, such as the union of the masculine with the feminine, the matter with the spirit, heaven with earth, which gives a sense to the belief that the man must seek his elevation to heaven by climbing the pyramid of life, but on the way he can descend connecting with the mundane and material, slowing down his spiritual evolution.
So, we could conclude that the Star of David eclectically symbolizes the conjunction of the energy of heaven along with the energy of earth, so it is valued as a protective and magical talisman for many people of different religions and cultures, as well as an alchemical symbol or emblem of fire and water, and it is also widely used as a decorative symbol in homes and jewellery.
On the other hand, the Star of David is considered as the equivalent to the Taoist Ying-Yang, so the triangle up is Yang and the one that points down is Ying. From these beliefs, it is also used as a stabilizing element of the energies, in the decorations of houses, and in the making of different jewels.
Already in the twentieth century, the Star of David was used for evil purposes by the Nazis, with the aim of exterminating the Jews who lived in Germany and other European countries, so the Nazis used it as a yellow badge that the European Jews had to carry in their arms or in a visible place, and it was imposed for the first time in Poland in 1939, and by the year 1941 it was declared obligatory for all the Jews who lived in Germany and Austria.
It should be noted that since this symbol was imposed on the Jews until 1944, the same changed several times, being noticed that sometimes stopped being a regular hexagram, becoming patches of intense yellow colour in order to make the identification of the Jews easier, to control their movements and to deport them later to the concentration camps where they were finally exterminated.
Therefore, a symbol that means the connection between heaven and earth, regardless of the cultural and / or religious meaning that is given to it from a very spiritual plane and with clearly divine and positive purposes for the human race, was used for a maniac person like Hitler and his Nazi accomplices, who looked more like devil’s monsters, to annihilate millions of people in the name of a perfect Aryan race, which never existed nor will exist, not with those characteristics at least.
This symbol of so much importance at world-wide level was introducing itself more and more in the synagogues and in different cults since the twentieth century, when the Jewish community managed to incorporate it again in the city of Prague. In 1948 the state of Israel assumed the Star of David as a symbol of its country that is in its flag, and in 1980 the Zionist movement adopted the star as an emblem.
This is how, throughout history, the Star of David has represented the search for spirituality, the balance between the earthly and the divine, and no matter what religion is professed to understand that its meaning is of utmost importance for the world, which generally is in power struggles for material resources, for religious, political and / or social ideals that have led to suffering, to senseless wars, to hatred between races, and that if this continues like this, the man would be in search of his own destruction.
For these reasons, instead of seeking war, the man should go look for the Star of David, understanding that this search goes beyond a specific symbol, culture or religion. When we refer them to look for it, we are internalizing its meaning, which leads us to a single direction, to the balance between the material and the divine, to that ying yang that we all have inside that balances the sense of good and bad, of feminine and masculine, of hatred and love.
That in itself is the Star of David, and his search must take us on the right path, on the path to peace, spirituality and balance of each being, so that it contributes to the global balance on our beloved planet earth.
Let’s see then “The Star of David” as that emblem that invites us to believe in universal love, in the fluidity of the energies that are present in every living being, so through what it represents it is called to the conjunction of the energy of heaven together with the energy of the earth and activates a divine protection that takes us to higher states of consciousness.
