Hawaii’s Best Beaches
Waikiki Beach
Just south of Honolulu, Waikiki Beach on Oahu Island has been popular with tourist crowds since its first hotel, the Moana Surfrider, opened in 1901.
Today, it’s still a major attraction, and you’ll find most of Oahu’s hotels and resorts here, as well as restaurants and shops along Kalakaua, its main street.
It is a legendary place to learn to surf thanks to its smooth and consistent waves. There is much more to do, both in the ocean and outside. You can rent jet skis, go parasailing, and even pay your respects at nearby Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona Memorial.
Ko Olina Beach, Oahu
Located on the west side of Oahu, Ko Olina Beach is another beauty. It’s also perfect for young children, snorkelers, and anyone who doesn’t want to be swept away by big waves. That’s because Ko Olina is protected by four lagoons that provide an oasis of tranquillity for swimming.
Wailea Beach, Maui

Hanalei Bay Beach, Kauai
On the north shore of Kauai Island, Hanalei Bay Beach is awesome. The golden sand beach on the Na Pali Coast stretches for two miles along a sparkling turquoise and emerald bay backed by tall green peaks and gushing waterfalls. In summer, the water is calm and perfect for swimming, while the winter months bring waves and a crowd of surfers.
Hanalei City is equally attractive. A charming surfer vibe prevails throughout the place, and the whole place has a laid-back, land-end vibe. There are also a number of great restaurants and even a food truck scene.
Hapuna Beach State Park
On the volcanic west coast of the Big Island, the beautiful Hapuna Beach is protected by a state park and is the largest white sand beach on the Hawaii Island.
Even the locals like to visit this easily accessible beach for a picnic and a swim. There are lifeguards here throughout the year, so families with children will appreciate Hapuna too. In January and February, migratory whales can often be seen off shore.
Waimea Bay Beach Park, Oahu
On the north shore of Oahu, Waimea Bay is where you come to ride big waves. Known for its 30-foot waves, it is one of the most famous surfing beaches in Hawaii. Between November and February, the waves are most intense, and that’s when some of Hawaii’s top surfing competitions take place.
During the winter, professional surfers come to town to play on beaches like Waimea, Sunset Beach, and Ehukai Beach, home to the famous Banzai Pipeline. If you prefer to skip the intense surf, visit it during the summer, when the waves get much smaller and you can swim.
Poipu Beach Park, Kauai
On the south shore of lush Kauai, where the sun always seems to shine, Poipu Beach Park is made up of three beautiful golden sand crescents, set against a sparkling ocean.
The water here is very calm and suitable for children, thanks to the protection of a reef, which makes it a good option for families. There is also a lifeguard on duty every day throughout the year.
Nearby you can snorkel and if you want to surf there is a break over the reef, but it is only for the experienced.
Hulopoe Beach, Lanai
On the south shore of Lanai, Hulopoe Bay is another beautiful beach known for its clear turquoise water and white sand beach. The most impressive stretch of sand is in front of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, and here you will find perfect water for swimming and snorkelling as well.
In winter, the water can get a bit turbulent, but in summer it tends to be calm. Dolphins jump and play in the water near the shore. In the winter months, humpback whales can often be seen.
Kapalua Bay Beach
On the northwest side of Maui, Kapalua Bay Beach is a quiet white sand beach with calm and clear waters. Two reefs that stretch out on either side of the bay create a sheltered cove here that is perfect for snorkelling.
It is also ideal for families with young children, as the water does not fall quickly. The best snorkelling is on the north side of the beach along the reef.
Lanikai Beach
Here is translucent turquoise water protected by a reef meets white sand on this half-mile-long beach. Near the coast, you will see two small islands, which serve as a background for photographs; one is a bird sanctuary.
The beach is popular for surfing and windsurfing, since here the wind can be constant. Also good for kayaking and decent snorkelling. The beach is also a popular place to take pictures of the sunrise.
Kaanapali Beach, Maui
On the west coast of Maui, Kaanapali Beach offers three miles of white sand and clear turquoise water. Here, you’ll also find great shopping, several restaurants, and two championship golf courses, along with a host of beachfront hotels and resorts.
Mauna Kea Beach
This is one of the most beautiful white sand beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. The water here has a beautiful turquoise colour and the waves are quite gentle during the summer months, making it popular with families. In winter, however, it offers a solid shore break for surfers.
Punalu’u black sand beach
The Big Island is home to some truly unique black sand beaches, including Punalu’u, which is located near the equally impressive Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you visit at sunrise or sunset, a visual spectacle awaits, as the colors reflecting off the sand create a different look than white sand beaches. You can also see sea turtles sunbathing on this beach.
